Having said that, I just picked up my copy of Peter Manly's "Unusual 
Telescopes" and it opened to the page (p. 92) describing Huygen's 
"pole-and-rope" telescope. A rope was stretched taught between the pole 
mounted objective and the eyepiece to keep them aligned and at a fixed 
distance.
