[ATM] 5.3 kg Cu3Sn
My arch non nemesis Richard Schwartz has given me 8 pounds of 99 percent
pure Bolivian tin. Thank you Richard.
In ingot, I've now got a little over five kilograms of speculum. I'm
getting good at making ingots. Under fifteen minutes to alloy a fairly
uniform 110 grams of metal.
It takes about 450 grams to make a 3 inch disk 7:1. It takes eight times
that, 3.6 kg to make a mirror twice as big. A six inch 7:1. It takes only
1 kg of pyrex to make a 6 inch standard thickness ratio blank.
There's enough raw material available now to make an additional 9 kg. At
the current rate this will take 4 months (read eight). I've yet to decide
how much alloy to make or how to use it. The crucible currently available
to me will hold only enough metal to pour a 6 inch blank. The largest
crucible which will fit in the furnace I get to use will hold 9 kg. That
crucible cost's forty dollars new, and can wait.
The plan still is to make consecutively larger blanks. A 90 mm is on deck.
The 63 mm is currently being polished only at Friday night Chabot mirror
making workshop sessions, which I've been missing.
Again, thank you Richard for helping me turn what was suppose to be a two
or three month experiment into an open ended nightma...ah.adventure.
