Thank you gentlemen for your help. I feel much more confident now.

Like the old song said 'little things mean a lot'. Bob May's statement "The
elliptical surface is just a fraction of what a parabola is" really put
things in perspective.  Why didn't I think of that?  :-)

The nul test using the two focal points sounds the easiest. but I remember
trying to use it a number of years ago and finding it very time consuming to
set up. I must find an optical fibber and try again. Meanwhile I will Take
Dave Row's advice and try and work back. I have already been working on the
70% zone but obviously way too much.   Yea....a fraction of a parabola is a
very small amount.
