[ATM] the perfect bucket

Haven't posted here in a while.Been working on my kitchen dob.But
Jerry's post caught my eye. Before someone else can say it.There may not be
such a critter...but there is 'close enough'.
Some more notes on wood scope fab.
1.A good rule of thumb for drilling screws.Even if you are using the fancy
tapered drills, always drill so the screw goes half way into the hole by hand.
And use a screw driver NOT a drill to tighten them.Reason being, most
drywall screws are junk.My wife says her floor installers cannot find
decent wood screws that do not snap when driven. You may run a screw down
using a motor, but hand set them.
2.About varnishing.I use this as a term,not a product.The best brushes I
have found so far are at Wal-Mart.For small work like telescope parts, they
have a hobbyist set that contains a very nice 3/4" finishing brush. My other
brush is a 'Woolson' brand 1 1/2". Choose brushes that have a real fine
feel to them. But still have some 'spring' for eliminating bubbles.
3.Better results come with good prepping.I use #220 w/d sil/con.and wipe
off the surface with vacuum cleaner and mineral spirits. This step cannot be
emphasized enough.I use the paper folded into a 3"X3" square, and listen to
how it is cutting.About 4 strokes and brush the paper with a tooth brush to
clean out the dust.
4. When you apply the clear coat, try to have the work horz. Have a
flood-lite overhead.Gage your progress with its reflection.Use thin even
coats.Usually I go in 3's. Base coat,(sealing coat) 2ond,(tooth or bed
coat),finish coat.Sand with #220 and wipe with min/spirits. When sanding
between coats, try to have an even white surface.Always wait 24's before
touching the work.Sand out any runs carefully.
IN GENERAL, wood finishing is very much like mirror figuring.Everything
you do under the finish coat MAKES the surface.Always do 3 coats, or more.
I use Min-Wax for my work. You can get floor varnish like "Fabuluster"brand
or a bowling ally grade. The idea is to get a tough finish that shows off
your hard work.I just realized I described marriage! Post me for more info.
regards, Ron
