Geoff...

If you look at the GIF of your machine in action,
you'll see that each stroke passes through the center
of the mirror in each direction while it only hits the
edge (of any particular mirror area) every 4 or so
strokes. 

Therefore, the center will get a LOT more grinding
action than the edges. You can also get bigger pits
near the edge if you just add abrasives while the
machine is running. The abrasives have to break down
to get into the center so they of course leave smaller
pits there.
