Basically, you need to have a 3 point support for the platform.  The South
bearing and two North bearings so that the rotation will be regular without
any flopping about.  This means that one of those 3 bearings needs to be
driven to get the platform to move.  Typically, one of the North bearings
are driven if you are going that way while the alternative is to push the
platform with a seperate pushrod arrangement or other type of gear drive.
As to the return of the platform after a drive session, there is always
doing the lathe setup of half nuts which will allow you to disengage the nut
on the drive and thus allow the easy movement of the platform back to the
beginning.
