Never tried the heating thing.  I'd expect that heat would gradually build 
up, until finally you just had a miserable hot mirror.

I once tried squeezing the edge of a mirror with a stainless steel ducting 
clamp -- actually several clamps chained together, width was about 1/2".  
Adjusting the clamp to various positions down the side produced noticeable 
effects in the Ronchi and Foucault testers.  The effect was not 
complimentary to a turned or long edge -- it seemed more like a trough that 
went quite a ways in from the edge.

Could be worth further investigation.  A spring loaded wire or band might 
work better.
