Just out of interest, will it work with a laser pointer as the source?  I'm
not sure that it will produce much of a light "cone" - being a laser - and
wonder whether it will illuminate the whole mirror, or just a 2-3mm spot in
the center.

Please let us know how it goes. It should certainly make finding the return
beam as easier job.
