I lined my secondary cage with paper-backed birch veneer.

The rough paper inside works well with Krylon Ultra Flat Black spray paint.
On the outside, several coats of polyurethane varnish stabilize and waterproof
the wood.

It's very light, but probably more vulnerable to damage than Kydex.
