Some people don't like Kydex. It gets real soft in the sun and it is
pretty weak the rest of the time. It's dead weight.

It's desirable properties are that it is reasonably thin, flexible, opaque,
black and easy to cut. Probably lots of other materials would work as well.
I may use black nylon cloth instead.

ABS is probably too brittle to bend the way Kydex does.

Aluminum is much lighter and plenty strong enough. Steel is easier to weld.
Aluminum doesn't rust.
