I once decided to make a metal mirror out of airgun pellets. I melted
a few hundred pellets in a pan on the electric stove (1st stupid
thing that day). Then I though that rather than make a flat blank, I
could use the thin 6" dia. plate glass tool from my recently
completed Edmunds mirror kit as the master. I built a dam out of many
layers of masking tape, then poured in the molten tin/lead. THAT'S
when it occurred to me that this wasn't a good idea. Just then, the
plate tool shattered into 3 or 4 pieces.
This wasn't the only stupid ATM thing I've done - I also tried to
melt paraffin in a pan, on the same stove (set to HIGH). The vapors
promptly exploded. Wow - that was fun! I did have a hard time
explaining the odd looking scorch mark on the ceiling to my Mom.
My only excuse is that I was in my mid teens at the time...
