I've never tried your techniques of using pitch for an adhesive (pitch isn't
so cheap for us amateurs as it is for the pros) but the copper probably is a
better idea than steel as the grit will embed itself a bit into the copper
and thus will continue doing cutting work without being broken up itself
because the copper is providing a better more resiliant support for the
carbide grain.
I notice that you also spent some time in your refractor article explaining
how to do pitch for supporting tiles for grinding. It is interesting to get
more info on doing refractive elements out there on the web.
