Re: ATM RE: Silvering.
G'Day All
I was wondering if anyone who had silvered their mirror had tried to remove
the tarnish with that old time remedy of Washing Soda (Sodium Carbonate -
Na2 Co3).
Years ago I downloaded a recipe for silvering a mirror from a local bulletin
board (that's how long ago that was - pre internet).
My wife had just bought a kit from the local agricultural show (county fair)
that consisted basically of an aluminium plate and a box of washing soda.
The idea was, you placed the al plate in a plastic dish added hot water and
washing soda. Gave it a stir and them dipped your household silver and
jewelry onto the al plate and the tarnish was removed after a couple of
minutes of furious bubbling. This thing actually worked. The silver was
restored to it's shiny glory without touching the silver surface. The silver
must be in contact with the aluminium though.
I immediately thought this was an ideal way of maintaining a perfect silver
surface on a mirror without having to touch the surface.
That's as far as the project got. But with all the recent talk about
silvering again, this could be an easy way of keeping a silvered surface
tarnish free!
We have since learned we didn't have to pay $20 for the kit. You can buy
washing soda from the laundry section of any supermarket for cents and
aluminium foil works just as good as the aluminum plate.
Does anybody see any problems using this method?
