Re: ATM making a multi-capable tester

I am interested in your tester design, if you don't mind sending what information you can, please do.  Written or other wise will be greatly appreciated.
 My tester uses a micrometer located on the end opposite of most testers and mounted on the mirror side. I did this primarily for comfort by reaching around the tester itself. The tester is modeled in the design similar to that of Mr. R. Berry's, with a moving light source, and with some minor differences: for the viewing end, I used the up right post and cross arm from a magnetic base dial indicator stand. The post itself is fixed to the upper carriage, while the cross arm has ability to move up and down and rotate as needed. It's on the cross arm that I want to be able to modify to accept what ever devises needed to conduct my testing.  I'm hoping that I can do several tests without having to make any major device adjustments and reposition the tester with each device setup. My problem is the mechanics of the different test devices. So, far I've got the slitless and ronchi testing down pact. But, for the wire, pin hole (size) and poor man's caustic test I still need help. 
This set up (this far) may not be practical, but it sure was fun thinking about and making.
All comments are welcome. BTW, what or where is Malacara - Optical shop testing?

I had a similar idea a year or so ago about making a multi purpose tester. While it seemed easy enough to construct as a single unit the fact I was using different light source types did over complicate it. I ended up making a base unit with which I was able to accurately measure the longitudinal motion of either a knife edge, wire or grating via a dial gauge. To this base unit I fixed (simple slot-in attachments) different heads so I could select between pinhole, slit or colour filter units. With a second attachment beside the light source head with the knife edge, wire or grating to test the return beam.
With the advent of brighter LED's I am now going to modify the tester to use a single source instead of swopping between white light (broad band) source for the pin hole and slit when used with Foucault, Ronchi and colour filter tests to a laser diode working through a beam expander for the wire test. I think I still have rough working drawings of this set-up if your interested, failing that I'll get some prints scanned and post them to you.
