The best results I've had in drilling glass are to use a round-head slotted
bolt in a drill press. Build up a little rim around the area where you
want the hole and put valve grinding compound (from an auto supply store)
in it, then lower the bolt and start grinding at a relatively low speed.
The result is a beautiful, perfectly formed hole, with an edge that's not
very sharp. This works on very thick glass as well. This technique is
(obviously) not very fast.
