ATM "Tubular" Grinding Tools

It was mentioned a while back that a section of metal pipe or tubing
could be used for rough grinding. I missed most of that discussion so
this might be an old question. If so, I'm sorry and some one shut me up!

There is construction going on near my office, and I saw some potential
"tools". Would a 4 inch or 6 inch cast iron pipe cap work?  How about
the same size cast iron floor flanges?  Could 7 pieces of 2 inch
diameter pipe be welded together in a hexagon to make a tool?
