Just my 2 cents...
I sorta prefer the helical focuser to standard rack and pinion types.
The problem I have with the rack and pinion is that its just not fine
grain enough. Especially at high power. Also, when changing directions
there is that dead spot. Now, I'm sure that any decent Crayford or
Rack and Pinion unit wouldn't have this; my experience is with budget
focusers.
Anyhow, I really like the "fine tune" ability of the helical focuser.
And yes, it is a pain when switching non-parfocal eps. I'm not
set up with a spacer tube to make them parfocal -- I just unscrew
it a fair amount.
your mileage will definetly vary.
(If I could just figure out how to hook a motor drive to my helical
focuser... B^)
