ATM Airline overhead compartment size

I couple of weeks ago someone asked if anyone knew the size
of the airline overhead compartment for the purpose of designing
their Newt to fit so they could travel with it. I went on business
travel and here are the specs for anyone with this in mind:

The size restriction for overhead compartments on airlines are
objects that are no larger than 24"Long x 10" wide x 16" high.
The object must weight 40 pounds or less.

You can have two of these objects as carry-on
luggage so you could design the scope to fit in two
containers maybe but I would make things slightly
smaller than the specs and slightly lighter in case
they pull out the measuring tape and scale you don't
want to be off by some trivial fraction. Keep in mind
that this is the requirement on the large planes. If you
use a "puddle jumper" they will want to check the
"luggage" into the cargo hold. Please return your seats
to an upright position, stow your tray tables and be careful
when opening the compartments as shifting may have occurred
during flight. You wouldn't want to break your 40 pound scope
on some person's noggin.
