I've seen a few of these.  The story apparently goes something like this...

Meade makes two versions of these scopes:  a strictly visual model with a
small secondary and the mirror dropped back and a photo-visual model with
the mirror pushed up and the larger secondary.  More than a few were
shipped with the wrong secondary for the mirror placement.  If you look at
the back end of the tube, you should see two sets of holes for mounting the
primary.  Your problem might be solved by dropping the mirror back and
using the second set of holes.  All this assumes much, so I could be off
with respect to the scope you have in your hands.  Would dropping your
mirror back allow using the 2.25" secondary?
