In regards to the "standard overhead compartment" I don't think there is
any such thing as all aircraft have different size compartments, sometimes
even within the same aircraft. There is a standard size for carry on
baggage though. It is 23cm (8") depth 34cm(13") height 48cm(19") length and
a weight limit of 4 or 5 kilos in economy class. First and business
allowances are more generous. The vigour with which these limits are
applied varies from country to country. They are fairly rigidly applied
throughout Australia and you would not be allowed to take bundled truss
tubes as cabin baggage. A general rule to apply would be make sure whatever
you intend to take in the cabin can stand the rigours of travel as in-hold
baggage as I can assure you that late arriving baggage is not handled with
tender loving care. I've worked in airline ramp maintenance for over 40
years and have seen what happens to it.
