ATM Quality spray paint.
In case you are looking for a good spray paint for finishing your scope,
I'd recommend Plastikote brand automotive spray paint. Around here
(VA), it's sold at Pep Boys and Parts USA. The primer dries hard and
quickly. It fills and sands well.
The topcoat is very glossy and flows very well. The only word of
caution I have is that you have to watch for runs and sags. Although it
is an acrylic lacquer, it has retarders in it to improve gloss. These
make it behave more like an enamel when spraying. So, once it is even
and glossy -- STOP! It also drastically slows drying if you lay it on
too thick.
And, if your painting skills are like mine, you can strip it all off
with lacquer thinner and try again. I'm on my third try on this tube.
First try was Plastikote. It was looking beautiful, but I got carried
away at the end and it developed a big sag. Then I stripped it and
figured I'd try Krylon. What a mess! The primer never fully dried. It
clogged sandpaper after being given an hour to dry in a heated bathroom
(it calls for 30 minutes at 70 degrees. The final coat didn't flow well
and the surface had a lot of orange peel. Again, I stripped it, and I'm
back to Plastikote, but this time, I'll spray more sparingly at the end.
