I thought it was because they would find it very difficult to make perfect
plane and parallel surfaces at perfect right angles and thicknesses. And all
that without turned down edges.

Don't corners and edges wear more quickly?
Hm. Even though I'm sure the finished product will be closely guarded (in a
vault I believe they said) it is true, a piece could be knocked off much
easier. Plus, who wants to cut their fingers off with the razor edges!
