Gross astigmatis m will cause an out of focus image but it will
be more oval than circular and , as you go from one focus to the
other, the star will expand in one direction more than the other
to the other focus.  In addition, the image really won't shift as
you have described.
Do a Ronchi test with the star )not hard to do!_ and see what it
says.
