Something that I've seen also.  Since I use a camera to see the
beam, I don't see diffraction very well.  What is  really
happening is that the light source is illuminating more than one
clear line and thus you are seeing superimposed lines that don't
quite match each other.  Mask off the light source so that is it
only shining through one or two lines.
