Many things.  First off, make sure that the motor is big enough
for the job.  A HO scale (trains) motor should be big enough for
most focusers.  Then build a speed control for it with the
ability to go slow at the beginning of the buttton press and
slowly speed up.  This will get the slack taken up on the
drivetrain without moving te focuser very much.  There are some
nice speed controller schematis on the web for HO trains.
