The stqr parties that I attend generally are in areas where open
fires aren't allowed (that includes places back east) so I've
never seen a campfire at one.
Campfires, as I see them, are for warmth and light at night
mostly and that light is not the thing desired when trying to
view the night sky. A campfire during the day is something else
as there is already plenty of light. I'll also note that scopes
should be covered when the campfire is lit as the smoke will
adversely affect the optics very rapidly and you'll be cleaning
and replacing coated surfaces on a regular basis with the
problems that the smoke will do to the optics.
