Jan, I have made several and have never had a problem with stability.
I build my with an angle between the wires of 20 degrees +/-, but 15
degrees should work well too. I don't cross mine, and I use individual
wires. If one should break, I can replace it in less than 5 minutes,
and alignment is reestablished, since I make extra wires when I make the
originals.
Tension in the wires above the amount needed to keep them straight is
not needed. Increasing the tension will not make the spider "stiffer".
If you don't believe it, do a vector analysis on it!!!
