Ah, I think that you got that one read wrong a bit.  Campsites
(as opposed to campfires) are common.  Cooking, if done is
usually done on a propane or gas fire rather than with even
charcoal fires.  After twilight, there is generally no white
lights unless an emergency happens.  Big campfires for light are
basically not why we go out into distant hinderlands but are
usually the thing we avoid.  We want to see the faint lights from
the sky, not some flames here on earth.
Go back and reread where you got the campfire from and I'll bet
that it really said campsite.  If so, be careful in the future
when you read things and when they don't seem to make good sense,
you probably read some word wrong.  A common mistake that got
emphasized on the early SNL newsroom sketches.
