[ATM] CAmpfires

Hello List: Astronomy clubs sometimes sponsor observing sessions complete with campfires. This seems unwise. Years ago I worked in the everglades where we had spore traps set-up to monitor airborn blight. The devices would trap microscopic spores and other very light materal in the air, including "soot" and other garbage from fires. We used to anticipate finding more particulate matter and oils when there were fires in the glades, often miles away. I wonder what problems we are inviting with our telescopes used near campfires? Has anyone examined optics before and after with a microscope or other?
