I made mine with matte formica on two layers of particle board. The wheels are skateboard wheels. It turns so well that I had to put a brake on it. The OTA is about three times the weight of yours.
I'd expect if you used metal wheels on a metal track that you will notice every bug and bit of dirt that lands on the track.
Long ago I made one with metal wheels riding on the same formica surface, about twice as heavy as yours. After a few years, it did make a couple of small dents in the formica where the underlying wood was weak. They were annoying!
