The X design requires that you have two planes for the tubes
which increases the size of everything.  Yes, it is stronger,
especially in the longer FL scopes but not by all that much in
the short designs that the large scopes are.  You could do a
single plane X design but you'll then need to have special X
sections or otherwise allow the two tubes to pass each other in
the same plane.
