Since it is almost the solstice, this  article might be of interest  in the
area of solar observation. On Fajada Butte, Chaco Canyon, New Mexico there
is an ancient solar marking site that records the equinoxes and solstices
http://www.solsticeproject.org/lunarmark.htm  In addition there is  evidence
that the site was also used to record the 18.6-year cycle of the lunar
standstills.
