There has to be an opening to let in the light you want.  The point of
the shade is to keep light off of the rest of the scope.  Minimizing the
heating effect of the sun is a big job.  There isn't one trick that will
do the whole job.

STW, the shade idea isn't original to me.  The new dome at Big Bear
Solar Observatory is completely covered except for a hole in the shutter
to let light in to the scope.  Old pictures of solar telescopes at Mt.
Wilson show shades on the upper end of the tubes.
