Thanks everyone for the comments. It's good to hear this method has proved successful. I was interested in Bob and Tony's idea of using foam or balsawood as the core material. Would one simpler idea for the tube construction be to make one panel of fibreglass and foam and then cut it at 22.5 degree angles? Scott Rychnovsky did something similar with plywood glued to foam here:

Would fibreglass be lighter than ply in this method? I am drawn to the aesthetics of the strip plank method but in the end I want a tube that is light enough for me to carry.
