Rather than using the heavier wood, you may want to consider
styrene foam for the inside material. Much lighter and just
almost as rigid as using wood.
The idea here is to gain rigidity by making stressed skin parts.
The inside only needs to be strong enough to support the
fiberglass from buckling at the limit of it's stress and really
isn't part of the force carrying structure. You do need to
reinforce places where local stresses are as the high forces
there can easily deform the surfaces of the structure and cause
failure.
