       A similar device, well used successfully by our forfathers, was the 
weights suspended on a  roap wound around a drum.  Go to 
phoenix@astronomynz.org.nz and click on 'Phoenix Astronomical Society, and 
you will see a beautiful 100 + year old 8 or 9" refractor that has been in 
regular use in observatories for all that time and still functions well.  No 
electrics, no water, Just wind the weight up from time to time with a little 
crank. A little brass govnenor spins around keeping it in time.
