There are more ways than one to skin a cat (reminds me of the of the
colleague from the US telling me about a course he'd taken in cat-skinning.
More ways than one, I knew, but taking courses???? It had me puzzled until I
realized it was in CAT scanning...)

One well tried solution would be a pendulum clock, a well-tested and
potentially extremely accurate device - instead of the weight, you have the
corner of the platform pulling and supplying the power needed. You might
even use a commercial clockwork, if you can adjust the gearing for the
appropriate rate - and even have the clock strike the hour after full
travel, telling you to rewind!
