Don't use water, it can freeze.  I suggest using
either a light mineral oil or an alcohol-based
flotation medium and recirculate the fluid, of course.

The only problem I see with the alcohol base is that
the fluid level will go down by a couple of ounces an
hour (or a few 12-oz increments every hour) depending
on how many people at the star party consume it.
