The principle applies to water with automotive antifreezes and
many other additives as well as many other liquids. Things like
solid concrete structures, buckets filled with liquids, plastic
tubings, are not popular targets of misbehaving teenagers,
although, shiny expensive looking valves might be.
I still recall a big mess here in which a cottage was destroyed.
Solar panels were stolen from the roof, car batteries were thrown
through the windows, battery acid all over the floor. Fire was
involved, but not clear if it was a fire set in the middle of
the floor for heating or attempt to burn the place down.
Structures with re-inforced concrete and minimal and simple/cheap
components for a fixed observatory make sense. I have considered
a concrete barndoor arrangement. For now, I have a tilted
concrete fork mount with a work gear arrangement. The worm has a
shaft with no permanent gear/pulley/motor attached, so I can connect
any power source I choose. Sometimes I use a motor, other times I
turn it manually. I could envision turning it, or even replacing it,
with a liquid based system, like some we have been discussing.
