It is possible to get sub-arc sec tracking using more conventional methods.
Here are a couple of methods that I have experimented with in the past. I am
a believer in the use of averaging a number of less accurate drives  to
create a more accurate overall drive. About twenty years ago, I saw the
cable drive used by a company to rotate a wafer saw with sub-arc second
repeatability. The flexible rod drive was my idea. I have since been working
on a direct drive "centipede" averaging drive system.
