You might try a supplier to the shooting sports, such as www.midwayusa.com
("Midway"). There are various products sold for rust-prevention
when storing firearms long-term. Some are moisture grabbers, but
others are anti-oxidants. Woodworking supply places also have
"magic" impregnated papers for enclosure with stored carbon steel
woodworking tools. Some of these might *emit* a compound that would
interfere with the speculum though.
(The olde-tyme remedy was a block of camphor in the tool box).
Along another line, would something like a sacrificial anode work?
Like screwing a chunk of zinc to iron.
Is tarnish due to sulfides (such as afflict silver) also a problem
with speculum?
