Argon, as supplied for TIG welding, is easily obtainable and
fairly pure. It's also heavier than air so it is easy to purge
the air from a container by gravity then put the lid on. Any
small quantities of air that seep in over time will stay at the
top, with your protected surface at the bottom sitting in Argon.
BTW, when you talked about your various processes earlier, you
didn't mention annealing...?
