Probably better yet would be to stress the tubes to the side ala
the string telescope.  The tubing will stay rigidly in place
until the stress on it is strong enough to exceed the stress put
on the tube by the string and then you get your flex back but by
then you'll not be very interested in what else the telescope is
doing at that point.
