Gary, you're worrying way too much on this!
The requirement is that you have a hard  substance to grind the grit between
it and the glass and that digs a hole in the glass.  You also erode the
other substance as well.  Some substances work better than others.  Aluminum
is nice in that the grit tends to slightly embed itself in the aluminum and
that tends to scrape the glass as well as chip it.
Go grab a chunk of steel or iron - steel is an iron with some valuvable
other metals in it that modify it's strength and so forth - and start
grinding.  If you want to, you can even stop by HF and get their cheap set
of 4" diamond saws and use one of those to do your grinding.
The thing here is that there must be a million ways to do the job, some of
which work better than others, and they all do work to get a nice hole dug
in a piece of glass.  Probably the most expensive for you would be to buy a
blancard grinder and grind in the ROC that you want.  You will grind the
hole in less than a half hour but the machine is large and expensive.
