The paver will be too soft.  You need something that is at least as hard as
the glass is or the grit will just erode the tool and not the glass.
For example, I had to take out some wedge from a lens that I'm doing
(slowly) and the tool that I made for polishing the glass is just dental
stone and I pulled the pads off of it to do some grinding (used the other
piece of glass to generate the curve) and grinding with 12 micron just
ground the tool without doing anything to the glass - it stayed polished!
Use a piece of iron or bronze or some other metal to dig the hole.  You
don't even need for it to be round (although it is more estectially
pleasing) to work.  A ring is nicesst (the end cap idea) as the radius isn't
worked into the tool before full effect of the working surface is obtained.
