Here's what worked very well for me. I took a piece of wood (a short piece of
2x4 in my case and drilled a 1" hole (the diameter of my poles) just a little
deeper than the depth I wanted the umbrella inserts into the tube. I used a
spade bit, so there was a center depressing in the bottom of the hole, so I
could easily take a regular (twist) bit and continue a 1/4" hole all the way
through the center of the 1" hole. I then took a 1/4" bolt, inserted it in
the hole with washers and a nut, so the threaded end stuck out of the 1"
hole.

To insert an insert I threaded it onto the bolt to the correct position
relative to the bottom of the hole. I placed the block of wood on the end of
the pole and tapped it on with a rubber mallet until it bottomed out in the
1" hole. I then rotated the tube to thread the insert off the bolt.

Hope this helps. Clear skies.
