It does indeed work, at least for FPF (Focal Point Foucault - matching 
returns from mask holes at the focal point).  I placed the beam of my 10 mW 
HeNe laser on a vertical piece of transparent fishing line - the beam 
spread out into a nice horizontal red line across the mask.
