I've tried both. I didn't have much luck with the nonlasing laser diode. At
low current, it wasn't very bright, and with just a little more current it
lased and got way too bright. Either way, the beam did not spread very
evenly. It may just be that I bought a substandard part, or that I mistreated
it in some way.
LEDs have always treated me well. I simply sande off the front lens dow close
to the wires, and they work like a champ, and it's easy to make a dimmer for
testing coated mirrors.
Clear skies.
