Re: [ATM] LEDs What do they offer:
Dave,
You obviously have not tried any of the newer high
brightness LED'S. They are so bright they make good
flash lights. They hurt you eye to look directly at
them.
Incandescent output more heat than they do light for
a given input. LEDs are smaller use less energy (I
drive mine from 2 AA batteries at about 10ma) and
produce no heat that I have to get rid of. Lastly
they come in may colors. I like to use green since
that is where the eye is the most sensitive and where
the mirror figure will be used for visual.
Incandescent works well but the right LED is a lot
easier to use for new construction with much less
fuss. Many of the modern variety already have the
limiting resistor built into them so you don't even
need to figure it out.
Don't worry about the energy wasted by the resistor.
It is so small you can easily run the LED from a
couple of C cells for months of Foucault use.
They also make good key chain red LED flash lights
that are perfect for observing use at night. Cost $2
at Walgreen's drug and run on tiny quater size
batteries. I take the green ones apart to make
Foucault testers.
