IIR, there was a discussion in an article from some very old publication
about the hose clamp idea, called the Prince Albert. It was reported that
the Prince Albert works only with a perforated mirror.

Where did the hose clamp method come from? Bernard Schmidt's original method
for producing an asphere by deforming surfaces and polishing a sphere used a
vacuum and annular support.
